How to Get the Most from Your GP Appointment: A Guide for Over 65s
The average GP appointment in Ireland lasts about 15 minutes. When you have several health concerns, multiple medications, and questions about test results, that's not much time. Preparing before you go means you'll cover everything that matters — and leave feeling confident instead of confused.
Before your appointment
- ✓Write down your top 2-3 concerns — what's bothering you most right now?
- ✓Bring your full medication list (or show it on HealthLog)
- ✓Note any new symptoms, when they started, and how often they happen
- ✓Bring any letters from hospital consultants or specialists
- ✓If you've had blood tests, ask if the results are back
During your appointment
- ✓Start with your most important concern — don't save it for last
- ✓Ask your GP to explain anything you don't understand in plain language
- ✓If your medication changes, ask: 'What does this new tablet do? When should I take it?'
- ✓Ask if you can record the appointment on your phone — most GPs are happy with this
- ✓Don't be afraid to say 'I didn't understand that — can you say it again?'
After your appointment
As soon as you leave, make a note of what was discussed. If you recorded the appointment with HealthLog, it will create a summary and action items for you automatically. Update your medication list if anything changed. If you need a follow-up, book it before you forget. If your GP mentioned getting blood tests, ask the reception to book them on the way out.
Consider bringing someone with you
There's no shame in bringing your son, daughter, or a friend to an important appointment. Two pairs of ears are better than one, especially when complex information is being discussed. If you can't bring someone, recording the appointment with HealthLog means you can share the summary with family afterwards.
