Medical card vs GP visit card: what's the difference?

A medical card covers GP visits, hospital stays, prescriptions (with a small co-payment), dental, optical, and hearing services. A GP visit card covers GP visits only — you still pay for prescriptions and hospital care. Everyone over 70 in Ireland automatically qualifies for a GP visit card, regardless of income. 2026 income limits for over 70s medical card

For a single person over 70, the gross weekly income limit for a medical card is €550. For a couple where both are over 70, the limit is €1,050 per week combined. These limits are reviewed annually. Prescription charges with a medical card
